A larp about vampire larping

It is Saturday evening in the distant year of 1999. The world was still peaceful, the goth scene was blooming and the writers of this larp were just about to enter elementary school.

For a select group of young and not-so-young adults that means it’s time to encounter the darkness: the dark underbelly of Woensel’s Vampire larp. You’ll take on the role of a larper playing out several crucial sessions which are sure to determine the future of Woensel’s longest running larp. However, not all drama is happening in the game of Vampire. Social struggles, rivalries, and personal issues will all find their way into the game in varying ways. Will you become the most powerful vampire? Will your friendships survive? Will you still know the difference between gameplay and reality by the end of it?

Goals

This larp seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • Recreate the feeling of the early low-quality Vampire larping from internet horror stories
  • Explore and take a critical look at issues that exist within the larp scene even today
  • Create a situation where in-game and out-of-game mix in all the wrong ways, which players can experience without actual hurt feelings
  • Create copious amounts of drama on multiple levels

However, note that it is not:

  • An accurate reproduction of Vampire larping or the 1990’s in general
  • A meme or comedy larp

Expected gameplay

In Dumpster Pyre: the Masquerade, we aspire to create two interacting gameplay loops. You’ll find yourself playing a toxic person in the 1999 Vampire scene, having petty squabbles and resolving them in socially unhealthy ways. Simultaneously, you’ll be playing out the social and political power struggles of a very bad Vampire larp. These two domains will of course intermingle at will, and there will be plenty of opportunities to take out your frustrations with another character on their vampire – or vice versa. Dumpster Pyre: the Masquerade lets you live through the in-game and out-of-game experience of a larp straight out of internet horror stories.

Grab your blackest costumes, put on the edgiest guyliner, and get ready to have the catharsis of finally being the escalating player in larp destroying drama.
